Why Does My Dog Keep Farting? & What Can Be Done

Sad Mastiff

It’s a Bit Smelly round here

I am sitting in my lounge minding my own business when this dreadful putrid smell comes up to greet my nostrils. Tammy (my mother’s dog) has let rip and it’s vile. Which led me to asking Why Does My Dog Keep Farting. In fact why do dogs (in general) seem to have such awful smelling farts

Food & Or Poor Digestion is The Obvious Answer.

With Tammy’s scent fresh on my mind I started to to some research and found a really interesting fact, some breeds are more likely to fart than others, in addition a family may have more than one dog/breed but one is more prevalent and yet all are on the same diet. Giving it its correct title, Excessive Flatulence, is likely to be caused by poor digestion, a change in diet, or an insufficient or bad diet. But Why some dogs more than others and is it possible to stop it happening.

This seemed a good subject for my blog post as it is something which all dog owners are aware, some more so than others. Yet we will often just say, “oops sorry about that smell, Bobby/Tammy have wind issues” Assuming the dog is not getting the blame because of someone else’s flatulence problem (admittedly I have been guilty of incriminating Dolly) it’s indicative of something going on in their digestive tract which I thought I would further investigate and offer a solution. I tested the solution on Tammy for live results.

When Does this Happen? Is there a link?

The most likely time for it to occur is some time after eating or drinking. It is a phenomenon called “Aerophagia Flatulence” which is something that happens when eating and drinking, especially if your dog (like most) eats quickly and takes in large chunks of air.  Dog Drinking From Bucket

Not just what your dog eats or even when your dog eats but more likely to occur (regardless of diet) up to an hour post eating and drinking.
Bizarrely some breeds are more prone. See a list of the more usual suspects, owners of these breeds will not be surprised. The common thread with most of the offending breeds are the wrinkly, short necked, snout nosed, droolers and slobberers. Although some exceptions to the rule, like the German Shepard.

  • Bulldog
  • Mastiff
  • Boxer
  • Pug
  • French Bulldog
  • Rottweiler
  • German Shepard
  • Beagle

Why Does This Happen

Aside from Aerophagia Flatulence there are several other reasons. Giving it its official title, “Chronic Flatulence” as previously mentioned is invariably caused by a diet poorly digested by the dog, this in turn causes excessive fermentation in the colon. Some products cause this action more so than others, so if any of the attached are included in your Dogs diet try removing.

  • Dairy.Milk Products
  • High Fat Diet
  • Spicy Food
  • Soybeans
  • Peas
  • Beans

All, but not limited to, are a common cause of flatulence in dogs. Your dog may also be Lactose Intolerant and therefore it will be uncomfortable for the dog and will likely have flatulence as just one side effect.

So you have changed the dogs diet to a super diet, you are doing all the right things and yet there are clearly still problems.

Time for a trip to the Vets. Your Vet will be able to test for: “Malassimilation” this is simply testing that your dog is absorbing all the right nutrients. Other things to look out for are: mild abdominal discomfort, bloated tummy, rumbling and gurgling in the tummy. With poor absorption your dog may also suffer loose stools, vomiting and or weight loss.

9 out of 10 times Farting is just Farting and is perfectly normal, but on those rare occasions it can sometimes mean:

  • Malassimilation
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • IBS
  • Tumour
  • Intestinal Parasites
  • Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
  • Enteritis

To eliminate serious conditions the vet may well take a stool and urine sample.

So assuming it’s not a chronic, acute or serious problem and more to do with diet what can you do?

Can Excessive Gas/ Flatulence be solved, if so How Do I Stop This Happening.

Thankfully it’s a big and resounding yes to the question “can Excessive flatulence in Dogs be solved” Like us humans, lifestyle and a change in diet is required. Assuming it’s uncomplicated with no further medical issues then you need to start looking at diet and exercise.

My own pet (Dolly) and I have recently walked through the “Diet and Exercise” lifestyle change. It was a slow process with some dark days along the way. However, it gave birth to this – my Blog- and ultimately my Website, I took the opportunity to share Dolly’s experience with the World Wide Web. Where hopefully it will enable a few shortcuts for you the reader

Conclusion To The Farting Issue & What happened to Tammy

First remember 9 out of 10 times Farting is a normal phenomenon. We have identified that excessive flatulence can indeed be solved by adjusting lifestyle and diet. If this has been tried and you still smell a problem then a trip to the vets maybe required.

So back to Tammy; this little lady packed the proverbial punch and yet she was on a healthy diet, in fact she was on the same diet as Dolly. Yet we still had to suffer the awful smell and she could clear the lounge in minutes. So with some research, together with an informed idea from a clever vet who simply suggested a simple addition of healthy charcoal snacks to her diet. Didn’t need to be many. We had nothing to lose, so we tried these tasty (so I’m assured) black biscuits. The effect was almost immediate. I am pleased to say we now have a fart free Cairn Terrier.
